Nepal Globe

RCDP logoOur partner organisation in Nepal, Rural Community Development Program (RCDP), works to help local communities in the fields of community development, conservation, and education, and focuses on community participation.

RCDP aims to improve the circumstances of villagers by constructing and renovating schools, distributing free seedlings for nature conservation, and supporting training in formal and informal education methods.  It also supports orphans and handicapped children and runs two orphanages.

Based in the capital, RCDP operates in Kathmandu and in the Chitwan Valley in the south of the country, and needs volunteers in both places, except for conservation projects which are only in Chitwan.

Main fields of operation

Education, conservation, orphans, rural development.

Regularly needs independent volunteers for:

Conservation in rural plant nurseries.  To promote conservation RCDP runs small village-based nurseries in various areas of Chitwan, which produce seedlings that are distributed to local communities.  Your work includes seed collection, sowing, mulching, watering, weeding, etc.

Orphanage assistants.  You'll be involved in all aspects of the day-to-day running of the orphanage, including childcare, basic conversational English instruction, games, nutrition, administration, health education, etc.

Teaching  English: You'll teach 6-13 year olds for 2-3 hours a day in collaboration with local English teachers.  Additionally you can get involved with other school activities such as games, painting, sanitation programs, etc, and can run informal English classes in the village.  Not available in July and August outside of the Kathmandu valley, or in March or around October anywhere.  Other teaching posts, esp. maths/science/computer, are available for volunteers with suitable experience/skills.
