Moratuwa Children's Centre Extension - Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka - July 2012
The purpose of this AidCamp is to provide an extension to a centre built by 3 previous AidCamps in the summer of 2006, 2010 and 2011. The original centre was built to accommodate 30 children, aged 10-18, on a daily basis. Since then, SERVE has developed a pre-school project for children under 5 years of age.
However, as the number of children has now risen to over 75, conditions have become seriously cramped and overcrowded with children trying to study in the same area where others are playing games.
The centre, under the banner of A Home Away From Home, will provide the local children, who have no other place to go, with a child friendly environment where they can study, do homework, use the library and play games such as chess and carom.
The centre will be open after school and during weekends and holidays, and will be staffed by teachers and social workers, who will help the children with their educational, psychological, and social needs.
With time, SERVE intends to further develop this centre to make this a model resource centre catering to children with needs, as well as a community centre that provides adult / parent education and vocational training for income generation
