Hard at it in Sri Lanka

Work is well underway on the extension to SERVE's, now overcrowded, Home Away from Home Centre in Moratuwa near Colombo and the team are over half way through their three week project.

Our intrepid volunteers spent week one doing lots of sand sifting, carrying breeze blocks to the upper floors for the new walls (I'm sure we told them that we were extending upwards!), clearing the area for the creation of the new steps, sorting gravel, wire cutting, plaster mixing and finally plastering. Not easy in these hot and humid conditions believe me!

The ten-woman team have settled in well to their makeshift accommodation at the SERVE offices on Uswatte Circular Road and the excellent local food, prepared by the SERVE staff, has been particularly well received.

However, it's not been all work, work, work for the Group as during their spare time they have already taken a tour of the town, been shopping at Laksala, the Government owned craft shops and visited Kzone and the AidCamps/SERVE building at the School for Deaf Children at Ratmalana.

The Group's first weekend was also spent visiting Ratnapura, the centre of gem production, a former AidCamp project at Sevenagala and the Udawalawe Wildlife Sanctuary.

Here's some photographic evidence to show just how much they have achieved ...

This is one volunteer who can 'cut it'!

Mixing plaster.

It's all done by hand here ...

Visiting the children at their studies.

Team work in action!

Following a wide load on the way to Uda Walawe Wildlife Sanctuary.

Uda Walawe.

The children put on some entertainment.

A saw point ... sorry!

Mixing the old fashioned way.

Can they dig it? Yes, they can!

Every AidCamps' project needs an artist!

Still smiling with a week to go; just the way we like it!

Best wishes
